The Flag of Jamaica
Jamaica's Flag was first displayed during Jamaica's inagural Independence celebration on August 6, 1962. The final design of Jamaica's flag was an effort of a bipartisan committee made up of members from both parties of the house of representative. Although other designs of the Jamaican flag was proposed, the committee felt that the one chosen best symbolized both the past, present, and future of the young nation.
As shown from the image of Jamaica's flag, it has a diagonal cross of
gold that results in four triangles. The top and bottom triangles are in
the color green and the left and right triangle of the Jamaican flag are
in black. So what does all these colors represent? The color black stands
for the hardships and burdens of the past; the green represents the fertile
land and lush vegetation of the country. The yellow (gold) symbolizes
Jamaica's abundant sunshine and bright hope for the future. The colors of
Jamaica's flag are also the Pan-African colors and pay tribute to the
Island's strong African heritage.
Most souvenirs sold in Jamaica have the colors of the Jamaican flag in one form or the other. So when you visit Jamaica on vacation, be sure to pick up something with the "reggae colors" to remind you of you trip to the island.
